American Craft Beer Week-Monday New Beer Reviews

Tried some new beers this weekend, here is a round-up of some of the new brews.

Toby's Rating System:
0 = Nasty (undrinkable, there has only been one beer that ever got this from me)
1 = Ugh (I wouldn't buy it unless it was 1:59 AM and it was all I could afford in the store)
2 = Okay (If it is on sale and that is all I have in my pocket, I will pull the trigger)
3 = Good (I will buy a six-pack or drink a few at the bar, good but not top of the pops...)
4 = Very Good (Yeah, I might hunt this down and drink a little too much of it. Or a lot.)
5 = Favorites (If this were a woman, I would make sweet love to it)

SPRING REIGN ALE
by Ninkasi Brewing Company, Oregon

Uh, let me start this by saying I am a big fan of some of Ninkasi's brews. Their Total Domination IPA and Oatis Oatmeal Stout are delicious.

The Spring Reign Ale is their seasonal brew, available March1st-June 1st in bottles and in draft. This is a pretty light beer, crisp, with a very heavy floral flavor. Way too heavy floral for my personal taste, and the other people who were drinking with my all agreed. The floral flavor was very overpowering, so if that is how you like your beers, this may be a good one for you. It wasn't for me. My wife actully was the one to buy this on tap, and she ended up not drinking it, and it was passed around the table with nobody taking more than a few sips before it sat there until I championed up and drank the rest after downing the excellent 5/5 Pepper Beer I had from out local Riverport Brewery.

Rating: 2

MONGOOSE IPA
by Hale's Ales, Washington

I liked this one. It pours very pretty-an orange, amberish color. There is some flavor of grapefruit and pine, but the flavors aren't strong or overpowering, a welcome change after drinking the extremely strong flavors associated with The Spring Reign. This beer went over okay with the non-traditional beer drinkers in the group, they didn't hate it, which is always a plus. I certainly wouldn't have minded another, but I had multiple beers to try throughout the evening. ;)

RED CHAIR NWPA
by Deschutes Brewery, Oregon

Confession time-this isn't the first time I have had this beer. At the last local brewfest, Deschutes brought their infamous Woody to the event with a number of great beers, and this was amongst them. However, as the wife and i were heading at my mother-in-laws for the Mother's Day celebration, we were scouring the local Albertsons to find a beer we wanted to take, and we chose to give this a second try.

This is one fabulous beer. It has a tasty hop flavor which satisfies a beer fanatic like myself, but not so overpowering that my finicky beer-drinking wife won't suck one or two down. It has a nice, citrus flavor, but not in an overpowering way. We barbequed up some burgers and this fine brew complimented the meal perfectly.

This one is a keeper. Deschutes makes one of my very favorite beers, Black Butte Porter, but when I am heading to a summer bbq, I will have to think twice between bringing BBP and bringing a six-pack of this.

Too Cool Stuff-GIANTmicrobes

Alright, just so my readers are aware, I don't just endorse anything. I have to own it, have used it, and have to enjoy it to throw the TJK Stamp of Approval on it.

That said, I love GIANTmicrobes.

What are they, you ask?

(Me & Botulism)

GIANTmicrobes are the coolest stuffed animals on the planet. They are stuffed animals that look like tiny microbes, blown up over a million times their actual size. Their selection is huge-including different cells, diseases, tiny insects, and so many other fascinating itty-bitty items, all blown up and thrown into a stuffed and cuddly form. Mad Cow Disease, Red Blood Cells, Algae, Fruit Flies, Black Plague.

I dig them because hey are cool on two fronts...

#1. They are very educational. they catch your eye, and then you pick them up and each one comes with tags of valuable information about the microbe they represent.

#2. They are cute fun. I can't count how many times my wife, when we have had guests over, asks people if they want to see her 'Herpes'. They make great conversational pieces and good for more than a few laughs. Because of this, they make great gifts, for friends, loved ones, and enemies. Wouldn't you want to give you ex 'Chlamydia'?

(Me & Herpes)

The plushes come in several different designs to suit your cravings. The ones in the pictures with me are the 5"-7" plushes, there are also cool little Petri Dish size, which contains three miniature plushes, with some designs also having 15"-20" larger plushes, and some even have very cool Vinyl designs to add to your figure collections.

So, yeah, don't be left out of the coolness. Go get yourself some. You can just click on that link over to the right side there, and that will take you right to the website. Tell them Toby sent you.

Want even more information of GIANTmicrobes?

Thanks for reading!

New T-Shirt Designs by TJK

Released four new t-shirt designs today. They are now available at my store at CafePress under a new section called 'Just kidding by TJK'. These designs got their own special section because they are more geared towards people with a darker sense of humor. They are a little (and in a couple cases a lot) edgy and might offend those who are politically correct and overly sensitive. but they are all in jest, and they must be fairly funny, because some have already sold.

These four can all be found for sale @ Just Kidding by TJK

These are the four designs...

IDENTITY THIEF

HOBO SKYSCRAPER
(sold my first one of these an hour after it hit the site)

CARNIVORE

DESIGNATED DRIVER
(I really thought this one would be the most offensive, but people just laughed and told me to get darker...)

A quick Tuesday update.

Alright, just so you know, I have been busy designing t-shirts and logos today, but i have not forgot about the blog.

Have talked to numerous companies about getting some sweet stuff to review and giveaway. The first of which should be arriving any day now.

I also have a couple new giveaways in the works and will be releasing the info on the first of them in the next couple of days.

Because I care! ;)

I will also be posting later tonight or tomorrow some of the new t-shirt designs for you all to see.

And yes, part 2 of the April Beer Reviews will be up tomorrow as well.

Thanks for hanging out,
TJK

Comic Reviews (And Small Town Blues)

Went to Hastings yesterday to check out the new comics. Living in a small town with no comic story in thirty miles really sucks, I have got to say. No copies of Stormwatch or (major heartbreaker) Dial H in the store. Le sigh. Still, I did get my hands on some new releases from Marvel and DC, so this is what I have read...

Avengers vs. X-Men #3 (Marvel). This series has been a real stinker to me, a major letdown. It is like a Michael Bay movie, pretty to look at, but the story is just scattershot and almost nonsensical. The Captain America and Wolverine (sorry if that is a spoiler to you, but it has been available all over the web) was right out of left-field, and really didn't make much sense. Also the preview that was released to comic review sites was the last few pages of the story, so i already knew what happened at the end before reading it. The whole story so far is just a mess, and seems like some sort of bad fan fiction written by a fourteen year old who just wanted an excuse to have the two teams duke it out without really thinking much through.

Earth 2 #1 (DC). While we are on the bad fan fic theme, I might was well head here. While this certainly isn't the mess that AvX is, it wasn't particularly good either. To me, a first issue should be there to hook you into the characters you are going to be reading about in the series, make you want to care about them. You don't get that here. Instead, you get a story that is mostly set in the past about this world's version of the DC Trinity, with some little spots thrown in for the characters of another series which debuted this week. For a series to start out like DC's decompressed version of Marvel's alternative Ultimate Universe 'Ultimatum' (a storyline reviled by many the comic reader) is not a good thing. This comic is going to have to do a lot with the second issue to make me care.

Nicola Scott's art sure was pretty though, but this seems to be a bad theme with the Big Two these days-the comics sure do look pretty, but the stories are severely lacking, decompressed so reading individual issues over trades are a waste of time, and issues filled with all flash, and very little substance.

Teen Titans Annual #1 (DC). This comic was a mess. The villain is boring and generic. The storyline is straight out of snoresville-heroic teams forced to fight each other. Blah, blah, blah. I had really hoped that this reboot would improve the Titans, and infuse some much needed life into this stale franchise.

Nope.

Venom #17 (Marvel). Right now, this is my favorite Marvel universe series, hands down. The art is pretty and fits the character and flavor of this series to a t. The antagonists are interesting, as is the main character. The whole thing is very action-filled and fast-paced, and suits this title perfectly. Most of all, this series is very entertaining t read, something I think is missing in mainly of the Big two titles today. if you are not reading this title, you are really missing out.

Meh, that is it, for now, but later I will get around to the non-big two stuff, after I get to reading my Mind The Gap and Superbia issues, but I am a busy feller at the moment, so that is for a later day this week.

Of Brews And Beauty, Part 1 (Rogue Tasting)

So, you should know, several members of my immediate family, and myself, love beer. We try a lot of beers, from a lot of different countries and a lot of different micro-breweries here in the United States.

Last month, several members of the family took trips, one to the Oregon Coast, one down to Boise for the Rise Against concert. Both groups brought back new beers for us to taste. This is what their trips yielded...

{note: we tried a lot of beers last month, so I am going to break this up into a couple of posts, as my attention span wanes ;) }

Voodoo Bacon Maple Ale
by Rogue Brewery, Oregon
Uh, this beer was awesome. If you have never had the pleasure of eating a doughnut from Portland's Voodoo Donuts, then you have missed out, they make some of the best doughnuts in the country, and their maple bacon doughnut is one of their best. This beer does the namesake worthy! It is delicious. So delicious, in fact, that everybody who sampled the beer loved it, even the non-beer drinkers and mainstream lager lovers. This brown ale is very carbonated and has a very strong maple flavor. Not really a party beer, this is a very sweet beer (something normally I myself am not fond of, but this was a definite exception) suited as a companion for a meal, especially a breakfast with pastries and pork sausages.

Rating: 4

Chipotle Ale
by Rogue Brewery, Oregon
This one got some mixed reactions from the crowd. The claim for it, on the website, is "eye-opening chile flavor". Of the two bottles we drank, we really didn't get that experience at all. The pepper flavor in this golden ale was very tame, barely noticeable actually, especially in the upper two-thirds of the bottle. Now, this isn't to say it was a bad beer, it had a nice crisp flavor, and is an excellent beer for your next bbq and/or summer event, but if you are looking for a serious kick and some strong pepper flavors, then you are likely going to be disappointed

Rating: 3

Chocolate Stout
by Rogue Brewery, Oregon
Love. My personal tastes tend to lean towards beers that are dark and full of flavor. This one fits the bill perfectly, and the other "real" beer lovers in the family agreed. This beer has won a mountain of awards, and there is a very good reason for that. It is dark, it is chocolatey, and it has a somewhat bitter finish, and it is one of the best beers I have ever put my lips to. This is a beer you pour yourself a nice, frothy-headed glass too while chomping down on a big fat steak or a juicy burger.

Rating: 5

Mogul Madness Ale
by Rogue Brewery Oregon
This one, a darker ale, sure is pretty, a dark burgundy in color. The flavor is complex with strong citrus and hints of berries and mocha. It was a surprise when we passed it around because several of the women in the group who are not micro-beer drinkers really enjoyed this one. This is your beer to drink with a nice spicy Thai food or with a chicken meal, almost like a fine red wine. Strange, when you look up at these four beers how each of them play off well with the different food styles, a pretty fair range of examples that when together in your beer collection, can pretty much compliment any meal or occasion you are thinking of.

Rating: 3

****

Alright, well, that takes care of our samplings from the Rogue Brewery, but that is by no means close to all the beers we sampled in April. But I got other stuff to write about, so, we will continue part 2 of this very soon, okay?

Bye for now...

This Space For Rent...

By the way, I am all down for doing reviews of stuff I am interested in, and throwing a sick shout-out to anybody wanting to provide cool swag for reviews and giveaways. If you are looking for a solid place to hock your wares, I am especially down with any of the following items.

*Food (I don't do veggies, but if it is savory, meaty, sweet, and delicious, then I am good to go)
*Movies
*Music (better make sure it doesn't suck, cuz I am a junkie and while not especially picky about style or genre, if ya suck, you suck, and I am not afraid to tell ya)
*Clothes (I am a huge t-shirt whore and hoodie fanatic)
*BEER! (booze in general gets a great test run in my world, I have some solid drinkers in my life who are up for anything)
*Anything to do with ART and DESIGN
*Comics (I would say book too, but my ADD attention span makes most books a tough sell to me...it has to be a real good book to keep my attention...)
*Oddball and Interesting Stuff

Give it a shot...
